Outlet shopping in Boston is great fun and very popular among residents and visitors. As a matter of fact, the Wrentham Premium Outlets Mall attracts over 13 million visitors a year from all over the world.
Outlet stores are generally housed in Outlet Malls in the suburbs. There are exceptions like the Assembly Row Outlet Mall that can easily be reached from the city in 10 minutes by car by public transportation via the Orange Line. The biggest outlet mall in the Boston area is 35 minutes drive at the Wrentham Village Premium Outlets with over 170 premium brand outlets.
Outlet stores come in two flavors, factory outlets and regular outlets. Factory outlets are owned and operated by a brand, for example the Nike factory outlet at the Assembly Row in Somerville. Regular outlets are often owned by retailers and may represent one or more different brands.
In the past, outlet stores have been selling merchandise that are slightly blemished or have slight defects. This is less the case today as many outlets sell perfectly new products that may be overstocked or last year's model. Even better, some outlets sell products that are the same as sold by regular retailers, just at discounted prices.
