Two blocks wide and wrapped around Harvard University is Harvard Square, one of the most interesting and eclectic shopping areas around Boston. With over 8 million visitors a year, the Square is one of the most popular shopping locations in the Boston area.
Since the founding of Harvard University in 1636, the square has always been closely connected with the history of the university. Even today, you can see a strong influence of the university, with over six bookstores, the Harvard Coop, and many restaurants and eclectic coffee shops that cater to the student population. With over 50 stores, the commercial side of the square is becoming more prevalent, but there are still many remnants of the old square, including some old-style shops, street performers, award-winning pizza, and speakers in the public discourse.
Getting to Harvard Square via public transportation is easy. Right in the center is the underground “Harvard Square Station," one of the busiest on the Red Line.
