Ice skating is popular in Boston, with over 30 ice skating rinks available to the public. (click here) Buying ice skates can be fun, whether you're a beginner or an experienced skater. Here are some steps to help you find the right ice skates for your needs:

Determine Your Skating Style:
Before you start shopping, consider the type of ice skating you plan to do. Are you interested in figure skating, speed skating, or just recreational skating? Different styles of ice skating require different types of skates.

Take Accurate Measurements:
Measure your foot accurately to determine the right size. Use a ruler or a foot measuring device to measure the length of your foot in centimetres or inches.
Be sure to measure both feet, as they may not be the same size. Use the measurement of the larger foot when choosing skates.

Consider the fit:

Before you try on skates, make sure you wear medium-thickness socks. Skates should fit snugly but not be too tight. Your toes should lightly touch the front of the skate, and you should have a little room for your heel to move.
Pay attention to the width of the skate, as different brands and models may have varying widths. Skates that are too narrow or too wide can lead to discomfort and blisters.

Choose the Right Type of Ice Skates:

Figure Skates: Designed for figure skating, they have toe picks on the front. They provide ankle support and come in various styles.

Hockey skates are built for ice hockey and have a more robust construction. They offer speed and manoeuvrability and are suitable for quick stops and starts.

Speed skates are designed for speed skating and have long blades for maximum glide and speed.

Recreational Skates: Offered in various styles for casual ice skating, often with a focus on comfort and warmth.

Try on Different Brands and Models:
Visit a store with a good selection of ice skates and try on several brands and models that match your style and size.
Walk around and pay attention to comfort, ankle support, and overall fit. Skates should feel secure without causing pain or discomfort.

Consider Your Skill Level:
Beginners may opt for more affordable and beginner-friendly skates, while advanced skaters may invest in higher-quality skates that offer more precise control.

After purchasing your skates, ensure they are properly sharpened and maintained to ensure optimal performance and safety on the ice. Enjoy your ice skating experience!
