Farmers Markets are small islands in the middle of Boston where we can find the best from the earth, like sweet red carrots, multicolored heirloom tomatoes, fragrant garlic, watermelons, radishes, eggs, and much more. 

But Farmers Markets are not just important to us consumers, they are an important lifeline for our farmers.  When you buy produce at the supermarket, the farmer will get only 10 cents on every dollar you spend. The rest is lost on transportation, packaging, warehousing etc.. .  But buying at a market leaves the farmer 90 cents out every dollar. So It is a very important source of income and it gives our farmers a clear message that we appreciate and support their hard work.

Most food sold at Farmers Market is organic. But some farmers choose to spare the expense of certification because their customers know them and trust them.  If you are unsure about their farming practices, just ask.

To get the best produce at the best price, find out what is in season.  You will be rewarded with great flavor, texture and bargain prices.  Be ready to purchase the unexpected.  Harvesting schedules are not completely predictable, so expect surprises and be ready to pounce. 

So pack up the kids and bring some strong bags, some cash and head out to a Farmers Market. The farmers will appreciate your support.
