Step 1: Choose the type of computer.
The type of computer you choose will determine, to a large extent, how you will use it.
Tablets are basically the same as phones, except with larger screens, more performance, better sound, and more storage. Tablets use similar apps as phones and are great for lighter uses such as web browsing, drawing, music, video, etc.
Laptops are a step up from tablets and are the most popular type of computer. They give you everything a desktop computer has, including a full keyboard, a mouse, and, of course, mobility. Laptops can be plugged into large displays, so when at home or at work, they can function as a full desktop computer. 2 in 1 laptops allow you to remove the screen, so you end up with a standard laptop as well as a tablet.
Desktop computers give you the best overall features if you don’t need mobility. You will get high performance, large storage, advanced graphics, and possibly a big screen. It is the perfect choice if you work stationary all day with advanced software such as programming, graphic art, etc.
Step 2: Choose performance level
The cost of a computer is determined to a large extent by its performance. This applies to all types, such as tablets, laptops, and desktops.
- Light use: browsing the web, paying bills online, email and social networking, organizing and sharing digital photos.
- Average use: Storing and streaming music and movies; tasks like spreadsheet and document creation.
- Demanding use: multitasking with multiple tabs and programs, sophisticated graphics and photo editing, and video production.
Step 3: Choose between Windows, Apple, or Chromebook.
The world is divided into three computing camps: Windows, Apple, and Chromebooks. They all have advantages and disadvantages. If you are in a school or office environment, Windows computers are still the standard. If it is for personal use or for a creative environment, an Apple computer can be a good choice, particularly if you already have an Apple iPhone. Finally, Chromebooks are ideal for entry-level use where low cost is the primary goal.
