Newbury Street is not just famous for its upscale boutiques but is well-known for its unique art galleries.

Art galleries serve an important function by showcasing the work of artists and allowing art enthusiasts and collectors to experience and purchase it. The type of art can be broad and may include paintings, sculptures, photographs, furniture, textile and much more.

Visiting galleries on Newbury Street gives you a great opportunity to explore a wide range of styles, all in a conveniently small geographic area. There is a great variety of artwork, from classic American masters at Vose Gallery to modern minimalist art at Krakow Witkin Gallery.

Many art galleries on Newbury Street have been there for decades and have established a loyal local following. Some are even known beyond Boston. For example, DTR Modern Galleries specializes in modern masters and owns galleries in Boston, New York City, Washington, DC and Palm Beach. Or take the Robert Klein Gallery, whose owner regularly contributes to the Antiques Road Show at PBS and exhibits works by the most recognized photographers such as Ansel Adams, Helen Levitt, and Irving Penn.

But there are not just upscale art galleries with paintings of old masters on Newbury Street.  There are a number of  fun galleries where you can explore new artists that are still affordable.  For example, the Copley Society of Art exhibits works of young, mostly local artists.  What a great place to discover the next Picasso...

Many people, including myself, can get intimidated visiting an art gallery. But as a matter of fact, people working at galleries are happy to see you, even if you are not a big spender. They enjoy getting a chance to chat with you about their most favorite subject, namely art. If you’re new to buying artwork or are just browsing, just say so to the galley person and they are fine with that.

“Art is the window to man's soul. Without it, he would never be able to see beyond his immediate world; nor could the world see the man within.”

Lady Bird Johnson
